Oxfordshire Outdoors
Until recently the Service was called the Outdoor Education Service and although we have not lost any of our focus on Education we felt that the new name is a better reflection of the wide range of the work of our Service.
The County Council has a long tradition of supporting outdoor learning of all kinds for children and young people and their families and teachers. It maintains 3 Outdoor Education Centres in Wales and Devon to enable young people to experience environments such as coastline and mountains which do not exist in their home county. In partnership with the University of Oxford the Council supports a fourth centre at Hill End, just outside the City of Oxford. All the Centres are Eco - Centres and actively encourage visitors to consider the environment during their visit.
The County Council has established a number of other partnerships with local businesses and voluntary and charitable groups which create opportunities for studying the environment or participate in activities which contribute to personal development.
An equally important part of our work is the advice and training we provide for teachers and group leaders to ensure that they have the confidence and knowledge they need to enable young people to take part in any kind of visit or activity. We run specialist courses and also have an Advisory Teacher for Educational Visits who can advise on any issues around the planning and risk management of a visit.
